Pirozhki…Piroshki?

Every year, twice a year, my boyfriend and I go to the Washington State Fair (formally known as the Puyallup fair). This usually happens in April and September. The April fair is the Spring fair and is a little smaller; some of the stands are closed, not as many activities, and not all the rides are going but just like the full fair in September all the amazing food stands are open. This includes funnel cake, elephant ears, earthquake burgers, and a Pirozhki stand! So this is where the subject of this post comes in, the Pirozhki at the fair is one of the reasons my boyfriend even takes me to the fair twice a year. Now with that little bit of background on to the reason for this post… I decided, oh about 4 hours ago, that I would make Pirozhki for dinner, and I did cheat just a little.

Now please forgive the picture and the fact that there are not going to be any other pictures because I didn’t really expect this recipe to be a success! Yet is was, my boyfriend loved it, though he did say it wasn’t exactly like the ones from the fair.

And here is the cheating part; I used Rhodes frozen roll dough instead of making a dough! This stuff is like a miracle in the frozen isle and my family, from Grandma to myself, love it. Of course making fresh bread and rolls from scratch is great but being able to take some frozen dough out and letting defrost and rise with out all the needing is fabulous!

Well anyway.. to the recipe. This makes six (6) little hand held Pirozhki’s.

Print2

  • 12 frozen Rhodes rolls (must get out at least 4 to 5 hours before use)
  • 1 lbs. ground beef
  • 1/2 a small to medium sized onion (I used purple onion)
  • Salt, pepper, garlic salt, chili powder (just to taste)
  • About 1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • About 2 – 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 6 pieces of cheese cut into one inch cubes (can make with out)

This is so simple and you can even cook the filling for this before the dough is defrosted and just assemble later.

To make; Pre-heat oven to 350 F

  1. Dice onion, make the pieces ass small or as big as you would like. Place butter and diced onion into a non-stick pan over medium heat, once onions start to become translucent add ground beef.
  2. Cook until ground beef is done. Add Worcestershire sauce and seasonings, cook until everything is fully incorporated.
  3. Remove from heat and sprinkle in flour. Make sure your flour mixes fully, this will make your meat mixture thick and ‘sticky’ like.
  4. Prepare a cookie sheet with spray such as Pam or simply spread some oil.
  5. Once roll dough is defrosted combine two of them to make one, stretch out over your hand and fill with 1/16 to 1/8 cup of meat and a piece of cheese.
  6. Close dough, making sure to pinch edges together completely. Place seam down on cookie sheet.
  7. Once all six are complete cook for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
